Description
Selling a collection of antique turn of the century rings. Many more coming soon - thanks for stopping by! : )ABOUT:
Very special and unique antique ring with a domed starburst illusion setting in silver, set with a small rose cut diamond (slightly chipped), rising out from the rose gold ring face and shank. The outline of the ring face is delicately etched, with the detailing extending down the shoulders of the ring and down over half the shank. This ring is from the Georgian era, possibly older as I have seen similar listed as 18th century, I acquired it in Europe.
I wondered if it might be a locket ring or mourning piece as there appears to be a seam around the domed part and again around the disk that the dome sits on, but I could not get it to open with my hands and I would be loathe to use tools on it for risk of damaging it, so I would recommend the buyer not try to open it for fear of ruining it. The back of the ring face is closed.
I wish I knew its secrets or the stories it could tell! : )
Marked 585 inside the shank, which is the numerical hallmarking system they use in Europe, in this case 14k Gold. The band is wider all the way around so it has a substantial size on the finger.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
The ring is a size 8. The rose cut diamond is very small, like 1.5mm just to give a sparkle to the tip of the starburst bezel. The ring face with the domed disk is about 11.5mm and it domes upward to stand about 4.5mm off the finger. It weighs about 3.6 grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
The rose cut diamond is chipped leaving a tiny space between it and the bezel on one side but It is secure in the setting. It is not very visible to the naked eye but you should be able to see it in the zoomed photos. At least I believe it is chipped but the rose cut diamond is oddly shaped, someone oblong. This old stone was hand cut and they were frequently rough cut so I suppose it is possible that it was always that way but I wanted to highlight it.
There is a linear nick to the flat disk part of the ring face seen mostly under magnification but it is smoothed so it is not a crack to the gold. Quite a bit of dark patina to the silver ring face - this could be polished up to a nice shine but many of my buyers tell me they prefer the antique patina so I have left it as is. The hallmark inside the back of the shank does not look super old so I wonder if the back of the shank was sized or fortified at one time and stamped at a later date but I tested it at 14k to confirm as well.
Some surface wear and scratches to the gold and softening of the etchings from wear over the years so please note due to age, this is not a mint condition item.
Thanks so much for looking!
